Auction 23589:
Goodwood Members' Meeting
This automatic transmission XJ-S V12 Convertible was Kingsley's company car from new, and was used in that role until replaced in 1998. Kingsley then purchased the Jaguar and used it for a further year or so, since when it has been stored. Recently re-commissioned it is reported as running and driving well the only aspect of the car which does not seem to be working is the air conditioning. However having been in store for so long it is likely further re-commissioning will be required, the car comes with sundry bills and a V5 registration document. A total of circa 130,000 miles is currently displayed on the odometer.

East Sussex, United Kingdom
First registered on 25 August 1988 and supplied by Minden Jaguar of Bury St Edmonds, this flagship XJ-S has had only two owners from new, with the first being the noted car collector and businessman Kingsley Curtis. The current vendor has owned and enjoyed the car for four years.
Resplendent in what is believed to be its original paintwork, the Jaguar retains a deep glossy red shine throughout, with only some stone chips to the front end. The bodywork retains its flush shut lines, though the vendor notes two minor rust patches developing below the boot lid and on the left rear wheel arch. Silver pinstripes running the length of the car survive in unblemished condition.
The black soft top fits snugly to the frame when closed, and operates smoothly. The vendor reports no structural damage to the outer fabric, though the inner headlining has some stone chip tears and stains in places. Period-correct features, such as the headlight wiper blades and Jaguar security system sticker have been retained, bolstering the provenance of this example.
The brightwork – including the A-pillar frame, wing mirrors and bumper trim – has survived over 30 years in great condition, and lend an aura of elegance to this roadster. The 15-inch ‘Lattice’ alloy wheels are original to the car, though two are suffering from corrosion and would benefit from refurbishment.
Inside, the beige leather presents with no rips or tears, though is discoloured and marked in places, and would benefit from a deep clean and a professional re-connolising treatment. The vendor also notes that the piping has split slightly on the driver’s seat. All of the wood trim is present, though has minor fading as to be expected from a car of this age. The cabin electronics are all functional – and the period-correct NEC car phone adds to the 1980s executive vibe.
The most recent service was carried out in June 2020 by Alders Automotive of East Sussex. This entailed a gearbox solenoid repair, replacement of all fluids and filters, as well as replacement spark plugs. A new battery was also fitted, bringing the cost of mechanical recommissioning to £1,180. Prior to this, the XJ-S was last serviced in 1995, before the car was laid up in the Curtis collection.
The most recent MOT test was on 8 June 2020 at 128,348 miles. This resulted in a pass, with advisories noted only for a corroded exhaust mounting and worn tyres. The seller advises that the tyres will need to be replaced ahead of use as they are aged and borderline on tread depth.
This classy British grand tourer will reach its next owner with its full complement of original manufacturer handbooks and numerous historical invoices. The vendor notes that the service book has been stamped up to 127,000 miles.
A highly original example of the XJ-S V12 with single ownership for the first 28 years of its life, this Jaguar would be the ideal companion for spending lazy summer days in comfort and luxury. With minor cosmetic attention required, once completed this car could be part of a further collection or used as intended as an elegant weekend cruiser.
