Seller Dealer

Auction Type Reserve

This 1988 Jaguar XJ-S V-12 Coupe is described by the seller as a mostly original and comprehensively serviced car. There are 51,243 miles showing on the odometer. The seller shares that the vehicle has historically been serviced by either a Jaguar dealer or a marque-specific specialist.

POWERTRAIN

The 262-horsepower, 5.3-liter, OHC Jaguar V-12 is coupled to a GM Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 three-speed automatic. This fuel-injected, naturally aspirated V-12 was designed to provide smooth operation with abundant torque. The seller believes that the engine is original to the vehicle and states that it starts readily and runs well. He adds that the three-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly. No smoke or leaks have been observed by the seller, who adds that the cooling and fuel systems have been fully serviced. The seller states that the coolant hoses, radiator, thermostats, fuel injectors, and fuel hoses have been replaced. Exposed tuner-style aftermarket air-filter assemblies have been installed.

EXTERIOR

The seller believes that the paint and bodywork are original and states that they are in good condition. Fine swirls, scratches, and chips are visible. There are deep scratches which have been touched up on the lower front corner of the passenger side door. The pin striping is fading and peeling and there is paint cracking evident at the front edge of the right front wheelwell. All glass, lighting, weather seals, brightwork, and exterior trim are noted by the seller to be in good condition. The chrome trim is bright, with a dent noted on the chrome front bumper lip, and loose windshield trim on the driver’s side A-pillar. The black plastic filler by the radiator grille is cracked.

INTERIOR

The interior is a classic British design constructed with top-quality leather and burl wood trim. The seller states that the interior is largely original and the upholstery appears to be in excellent condition. The headliner was replaced two years by the seller, and the carpets do not show any wear and appear to be in excellent condition. The wood veneers are cracking and show delamination, warpage is visible along the front edge of the dashtop, and the driver’s side A-pillar trim is damaged. The air-conditioning and heating systems are noted to operate as designed. The gauges, power windows, power locks, and original Jaguar radio are stated to work properly. This vehicle is equipped with motorized passive restraint seatbelts which have been unbuckled for the photos.

CHASSIS

The Jaguar XJ-S has four-wheel-disc brakes and a four-wheel independent suspension. The suspension, brakes, and power steering are stated by the seller to be functioning properly. The seller shares that the suspension is original and unmodified. According to the seller, the braking system was recently serviced, including the rear inboard brakes. The power-assisted steering is stated to track straight, with minimal play. A set of Michelin tires are fitted. Bearing 2012 date codes, these tires are approaching the end of their service life due to age. The wheels are stated by the seller to be in good condition, with mild pitting evident.

DOCUMENTATION

This vehicle will be sold on a clean Oklahoma title in the seller’s name. The owner’s manual and all available service records will also be included.

The XJ-S was a great leap into the future for Jaguar and stood as the company’s grand touring flagship for over two decades. The XJ-S’s clean and squared-away styling has become more distinctive in the ensuing years and has aged gracefully. With a powerful and smooth V-12 engine coupled to a robust automatic transmission, this low-mileage 1988 Jaguar XJ-S is ready for its next grand tour.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
