This 1988 Jaguar XJS V12 was turned into a convertible by Ohio-based Hess & Eisenhardt before being sold new in Lawrence, New York. The car is finished in red over charcoal leather, and power is from a 5.3-liter V12 mated to a three-speed automatic transmission. Service following the late previous owner’s purchase in 2015 included replacement of the tires, rear window regulators, air conditioning components, and water pump. This XJS shows 66k miles and is offered by the seller on behalf of its late owner’s estate with a repair manual, a Jaguar Heritage Certificate, service records, and a clean Kentucky title.

Hess & Eisenhardt convertibles were commissioned by Jaguar and built between 1986 and 1988. This example is finished in Grenadier red with a black soft top that is shown in both its raised and lowered positions. Details include silver pinstripes, later-style flush headlights, individual taillights, fog lamps, and a front spoiler.

The video above includes a walk-around and views of the interior. Chrome five-lug 15″ wire wheels wear Michelin Defender tires with 2015 date codes. Five stock “starfish” wheels with Pirelli P5 tires are included in the sale, one of which serves as the spare housed in the trunk.

The cockpit is upholstered in Warm Charcoal leather with matching carpets, wood trim, and polished Jaguar-branded door sills. The passenger seat was reupholstered and both rear window motors replaced along with the heater control valve in 2015. Amenities include electric windows and locks, cruise control, automatic climate control, and an onboard computer. The factory cassette player is retained and a battery cut-off switch has been added in the trunk.

A wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel frames a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline, and barrel gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and voltage. The six-digit odometer shows 66k miles, fewer than 500 of which were added by the late previous owner since 2015. The horn and instrument panel lights are inoperable.

The 5.3-liter V12 was factory-rated at 263 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. Service in 2015 included replacement of the speed sensor, oil pressure sensor, battery, and a number of air conditioning components. A new water pump was installed in 2017. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission. The rear subframe mounts and trailing arm bushings were replaced in 2015.

The Jaguar Heritage Certificate lists the original numbers, finishes, and delivery information.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
