5.3L V12
VIN2W369DN
A rare and evocative historic touring car, built to FIA Group A specification, and believed to be one of just two non-TWR Jaguar XJ-S Group A racers constructed during the 1980s.
It is powered by a 5.3-litre naturally aspirated V12, delivering around 414bhp at 7200rpm to the rear wheels via a Getrag five-speed dog-leg manual transmission.
Originally a 1977 Jaguar XJ-S road car, imported into New Zealand in 1980, and subsequently converted in 1985 for Group A racing by Allan Prince and Mike Hourigan.
Built to comply with FIA homologation A-5023, the car competed in the Wellington 500 as well as several other period touring car events in New Zealand.
The car was later restored and campaigned in historic racing by noted racing driver Angus Fogg before being acquired by Triple Eight Race Engineering founder Roland Dane in 2020.
It has since been fully rebuilt in Australia by Roland Dane’s personal mechanic, though it still wears its original Wellington 500 Street Race livery.
EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES
This XJS is built to FIA Group A specification, featuring a naturally aspirated 5.3-litre V12, a Getrag five-speed dog-leg gearbox, and a 3.73:1 final drive ratio.
This example is finished in a timeless shade of white with racing number ‘11s’ on the doors and bonnet, blue and gold ‘Tipe’ decals on the rear quarter panels, and a variety of sponsorship decals, over a stripped-out body-coloured cabin featuring a black cloth-trimmed Cobra bucket seat, and a black dashboard and door cards.
It rides on a set of 16-inch multi-spoke split-rim alloy wheels finished in gold with polished barrels, and fitted with Dunlop SP Sport racing tyres.
Mechanical highlights include AP Racing four-piston brake callipers with Ferodo racing pads, an 86.5-litre fuel capacity with surge tank, competition suspension, side-exit exhaust pipes, and a full roll cage.
Inside, the cabin now features a black leather-trimmed Momo steering wheel, a custom driver-facing control box, an aluminium driver’s footwell panel, and an Auto Meter Pro Comp II rev-counter.
Braking upgrades comprise new stainless steel hard lines and Goodridge 600 flexible hoses, AP Racing discs, and fully serviced callipers.
A Borg and Beck Type 9 clutch has been installed, and the fuel system has been comprehensively overhauled with new pumps, filters, and fuel cell foam (valid to March 2025).
The engine has been treated to Competition Coatings ceramic-coated headers, a fresh ignition system, and a recent chassis dyno tune.
Cooling is managed by a custom PWR 55mm radiator with twin 1328cfm fans and a PWR oil cooler, all plumbed with BMRS oil lines.
Suspension is refurbished throughout with Bilstein dampers, new bearings, joints, and seals, plus upgraded components to match period-correct Group A specification.
The car is equipped with a Lifeline Zero 360 electronic fire extinguisher system (valid until November 2026) and a new Sparco six-point harness (valid until 2029).
The body has been professionally repainted by Brisbane Collision Centre, with new headlights, surrounds, and windscreen fitted.
The car is accompanied by extensive documentation, including logbooks, an original New Zealand registration, period photos of the car racing, and a catalogue of receipts from both the original build and recent works.
The sale also includes a comprehensive package of spares: additional wheels and tyres, spare Getrag gearbox components, front and rear dampers, brakes, a differential centre, engine components, body panels, and specialist tools.
