This 1987 Jaguar XJ-SC is finished in Black over Magnolia leather and remained in California with the original owner until the seller’s acquisition in 2014. The car was relocated to Illinois with the seller, where it has been garaged and driven seasonally, covering 3k miles in the last four years. Powered by a 5.3L V-12 paired with an automatic transmission, the car has received major services in 2013 and 2017, including work to the engine cooling and climate control systems, brakes and more. Recent work in June 2018 included an oil service and replacement of a leaking fuel line. Now showing 60k miles, this Jaguar is offered with a clean Carfax, partial service records, targa panels, an optional Surrey-style rear hardtop, the original soft top rear window, two sets of wheels, owner’s books, tools, a car cover, and a clean Illinois title in the seller’s name.

The current black finish is a repaint in the original color, performed around 2003 to correct sun fading according to the original owner. The paintwork is said to be well-executed, and noted blemishes include one small bubble on the hood and two on the driver’s door, which have not spread during the seller’s four years of ownership.

Chrome Dayton knock-off-style wire wheels and chrome wheel arch trims are reported to be a dealer-installed option, and the original five-spoke “starfish” wheels are included in the sale, with a fifth included as a spare. Around 5000 XJS targa/convertibles built between 1981-1991, and approximately 2,000 were reportedly imported into the US, with ~200 delivered in this color combination, according to the seller.

The cabin is trimmed in Magnolia Connolly leather with tan Wilton carpets, and a few tears can be seen on the fabric headliner of the windshield header and roof frame above the passenger’s-side A-pillar. The stock configuration has been retained apart from the installation of a Sony CD-radio head unit, and the odometer shows 59,420 miles, with 3k miles added by the seller over four years.

Power-adjustable seats show creasing visible on the driver’s-side, with no rips or tears. The interior seats two, with a parcel shelf and storage pockets in place of the rear seats. HVAC function is noted to be intermittent, and the wipers are currently inoperative. The trunk houses a spare starfish alloy wheel and storage bags for the targa roof panels. A rolling storage stand and cover are included for the optional rear hardtop.

The 5.3L V-12 is paired with an automatic transmission and is said to remain stock. A $7k service was conducted in 2013 prior to the seller’s purchase, including replacement of A/C components, hoses, and new rear brake pads and rotors. 2017 service included a coolant flush, new aluminum radiator, and a rebuilt left front brake caliper. In June 2018, an oil service was performed and a section of leaking fuel line was replaced. The seller notes some oil weeping around the valve cover gaskets, and a slow coolant drip.

A recent Carfax records an accident-free history under owners in California and Illinois. Receipts for service from 2013-present can be found in the gallery below.

A full collection of owner’s literature includes manuals, brochures, and a warranty booklet. A factory tool kit, a fitted car cover, and two sets of keys are also included.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
